Diego Aprigliano

I explore the blurred boundaries between the organic and the artificial. My work is formally articulated as a response to the materialist crisis of the present: I transform urban waste into raw material to construct new narratives of possible realities.

My pieces create a tension between the durability of industrial materials and the fragility of the nature they harbor. Glass, with its three-millennia lifecycle, shelters ecosystems of native plants; while electronic scrap and woods—materials that will outlive us by hundreds of years—are assembled into speculative fictions. These hybrid, useless, sometimes sonorous and kinetic constructions question our utilitarian relationship with our environment.

Beyond recycling as an aesthetic medium, each piece is a manifestation about the impact we, as a race, exert on our planet. By reinterpreting the discarded, I seek to generate meanings that challenge the logic of consumption and highlight the transformative, yet critical, power of human creativity in the face of an uncertain future.

Manifesting my need to create visual and written art. I also manifest my decision to do so while causing the least harm possible to this damaged world in which we find ourselves inhabiting.

Therefore, I will use collected, reclaimed, or recycled elements. Because I don’t need new materials to express what I need.

Therefore, I forever give up the desire to publish a paper book (even though I would love to!). Because I don’t want a single more branch to be felled in my name.

Because my conscience wouldn’t let me live peacefully if I knew that the place where we live continues to be harmed because of my art, which is so unimportant.
